How to tell if a watch is fake or real?
Determining whether a watch is genuine or a fake is a challenging aspect of the watch game. As fake watches become increasingly accurate, distinguishing between a genuine watch and a fake one has become more difficult. However, there are key indicators that can help ensure you're buying the real deal, whether you're in the market for a new luxury watch or a discontinued pre-owned model. Here are some tips to identify an authentic watch:
1- Check the details; bezel, bracelet and crown of the watch. Examine the watch closely for precise engravings, sharp edges, and a high-quality finish. The date number on a fake watch might not be perfectly aligned. In the fake Rolex Day-Dates, the days of the week may also appear inclined. Additionally, pay close attention to the brand name and logo, ensuring the writing is crisp and precise. Another aspect to look at is crown, make sure that the crown is not replaced, which can also be common with genuine ones.
2- Check the weight. A gold watch must weight heavy because of material. Always double check with a scale to see if your watch is genuine gold. A genuine watch is made from high-quality materials such as gold, stainless steel, and heavy metals or alloys, making it heavier and more sturdy compared to those made from cheaper metals. The watch in the picture is genuine Vacheron Constantin, Lady Phidias. It measures the same weight as the archives of Vacheron, 67.4-68 gr, 18k gold.
3- Ask for serial number. Most watches have serial numbers, but some that have been polished or had parts replaced might not have a visible serial number. This does not necessarily mean the watch is fake, but it does mean you need to pay extra attention to the details mentioned above. In Cartier watches, you can find the serial number on the back, while in Rolex watches, it is located between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position.
